Sean Spence: Q/A
#1
Linebacker Sean Spence today addressed coach Randy Shannon's recent comments about the lack of depth at his position.

So, is linebacker an area of concern?

"I wouldn't say that," Spence said. "We're pretty young at the linebacker spot, but we brought in a coupe of guys as freshmen that are looking to learn every day, are asking about plays and what they're trying to do to get better."

One of those freshmen is Kevin Nelson, who is working at the key middle linebacker spot.

"He looks good as do all the freshmen," Spence said. "It's hard to say right now (if he can play right away), but we'll probably know after camp."

* Spence says he's not sure if he'll start fall practice, which begins next Thursday morning, at weakside or strongside linebacker.

"It really doesn't matter," Spence said. "It's not a big difference. On one side you have a tight end, on the other you don't.

"I just want to do what I can to help us win games."

* Of the progress of Jordan Futch, who is coming off knee surgery, Spence said, "As of right now he's looking good, is running full speed."

* Asked about Colin McCarthy, Spence said, "This year he's that leader the defense needs. We're looking to feed off him. He doesn't just talk, he leads by example."

* Kylan Robinson begins the fall as the starter at MLB.

"Kylan is doing a great job," Spence said, adding, "We have to trust each other, believe in each other."

* Of close friend Jacory Harris, Spence said, "He's looking good out there throwing balls. Jacory didn't play in the spring, it ticked him off a little, but he did things to get better like take mental reps, helping AJ (Highsmith) out."

Spence said of Harris' leadership style that "He's the quiet mouse in the room, but he leads by example."

* Of his off-season work, Spence said, "the off-season has been going well. Everyone is buying into what we're trying to do in the weight room, training hard, trying to get better as a team."

* Spence pointed to DT Marcus Forston as a defensive player who has really stepped up from a year ago.

"He's really been coming back working hard trying to get better, doing extra work," Spence said. "He's been in a shell for a little minute, but he's grown up, matured, put it behind him."

Spence said he thinks the injury to Forston from last year is what put him in that "shell."

"He's very athletic, quick, strong, explosive," Spence said. "He can help in the run game, pass game."

* Spence said of the expectation level this year that "There's always high expectations at Miami. We're just looking to take it one game at a time, focus on each opponent, not overlook anyone."
