Livermore (CA) Granada High School athlete George Atkinson III is set for an unofficial visit to Miami this Thursday.

He's scheduled to visit Alabama today and then will drive down to UM.

"I'm not stopping anywhere else," Atkinson said. "We'll just stay that one day in Miami because I have to be in Orlando the 23rd for the Gridiron Kings event."

Atkinson has already seen several other colleges - USC, UCLA, Cal, Oregon and San Jose State. He also says he'll "try" to get to Notre Dame before heading back home.

Asked when he'll narrow things down, Atkinson said, "I think after these visits, probably near the end of the summer I'll get a good idea. We'll go through the pros and cons of each school and I'll know where I'd like it most.

"I'm not sure if I'll commit before the season. When I get that feeling I'll commit, but I'll take my five (official) visits, so most likely will wait through then."

He doesn't rule out making a commitment on a visit "if I love the place and I think there's nothing better."

But he also adds "my dad doesn't want me to rush anything, so I probably will wait."

He says Cane coaches have been talking regularly with his father.

"He's been talking to them mostly, talking to coach (Aubrey) Hill," Atkinson said. "My dad said they're looking forward to seeing me, will be ready for us."

Of what he'll look at most closely on the UM visit, Atkinson said, "Everything. I'll be meeting the coaching staff, getting a better feel for the environment. It's a different part of the country, so I'll see how they do things. I've never been to Florida before, and I'm excited for the Miami visit. I've always seen them on TV, it looks like a nice place to be. I'm looking forward to it, seeing the tradition they have at the U."

Atkinson could play offense or defense at the next level but expects to play receiver or running back.

"The majority of schools say they want me to play where I feel most comfortable," Atkinson said. "I'm willing to play wherever I can fastest contribute. There's not really one position I want to play, but I love offense."
