Homestead (FL) High School DT Chavis Akins has visited Miami twice this summer.

"And I'm thinking about visiting again soon," he says. "I've talked to coach (Randy) Shannon, and I talk to coach (Micheal) Barrow.

"Coach Shannon, he just told me what it takes to be a Miami player, things like that. He said it'll take having wonderful grades, a good mindset, that I have to be a good player. He told me it's not difficult to do, but he was saying that everything that is difficult could be accomplished. Coach Barrow, he just told me how it would be good to have me out there because they have Marcus Robinson out there from my school."

Akins, who lists a verbal offer dating back to last year, says he's getting regular mail from Hurricane coaches.

"They're asking about how I'm doing, that they hope I'm having a good summer, hoping it'll lead to a good season," Akins said. "They say they're looking forward to recruiting me to Miami."

Akins plans an unofficial visit to Alabama next month and Florida State later this month.

"I'll also go see LSU and UCF, and I've been to Florida State and Florida," he says.

Akins says right now Miami, Florida and Florida State are at the top of his list, and he adds that "LSU is close."

Akins says that Texas Tech, and Alabama also remain in the running.
